Covid-19 Virus 

Policy and Practices

          Springs Adventist Academy 
                  Health Safety Plan

Springs Adventist Academy (SAA) is committed to opening for school for the 2020-2021 school year.  We are also committed to providing an environment which keeps students and staff as safe and healthy as possible.  


The following plan is based upon the recommendations of the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment, the El Paso County Health Department, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the Rocky Mountain Conference of SDA.  The following plan will not eliminate the potential spread of COVID but is intended to mitigate the possible spread of COVID-19.  Our focus and goal of this plan is to limit outside factors which could increase our campus exposure to COVID-19 and reduce risk of spread among students and staff on campus.  


All persons coming onto campus will have their temperature taken and will be asked a series of health questions prior to being allowed to enter any building on campus.  Anyone who has a temperature (>100.4) or has had signs/symptoms of possible COVID-19 in the past 14 days, will not be allowed to remain on campus.  All persons over the age of 10 will be mandated to wear a mask.

Cafeteria Protocol

  • Tables will be placed in the cafeteria with every other seat marked off.  

  • Students will need to bring their own food and utensils from home.

  • Tables and chairs will be disinfected between students sitting at them.


Classroom Protocol

  • Students will be staying with their classroom teacher and cohorts the entire school day in their assigned classroom

  • Students will have assigned seats in each classroom.

  • Desks will be positioned to provide as much space as possible between each desk, six feet when possible. 

  • Each student will need to have their own personal school supplies. There will be no sharing of materials.

  • Students must enter the classroom and immediately go to their desk, not congregating in the classroom areas.

  • Students may be allowed to go to the restroom one at a time with permission from the teacher.

  • Each classroom will have a bottle of hand sanitizer.

  • Students are to use hand sanitizer upon entering each classroom.

  • Three times a day, teachers will disinfect all desks, chairs, doorknobs, and any other surface which may have had potential contamination with COVID-19.

  • Teachers will maintain a distance of at least six feet from the students during teaching, if personal instruction needs to occur with less than six feet of distance, the teacher and student will be required to wear a face mask per CDC instructions (covering both mouth and nose) OR a physical shield will be present.

  • Teachers will dismiss students row by row starting from the row nearest to the exit door.

Cleaning and Disinfecting Procedures

  • SAA will use JAN-PRO Commercial Cleaning of Southern Colorado for a once-a-week professional cleaning. In addition to the teachers disinfecting surfaces 3 times a day.

  • Twice a year we will hire JAN-PRO to administer their antimicrobial EnviroShield Endure system that can continue to eliminate germs for up to 6 months. 

Closed Campus

  • Our goal is to keep SAA functioning with in-person classes the entire 2020-2021 school year.  However, in order to achieve this, we may have to enter into a closed campus.  If SAA administration in collaboration with the El Paso County Public Health department determines that local cases of COVID-19 are increasing or we have a positive case, we will have SAA enter a closed campus status.  The following will apply.

  • All instruction, classwork, and testing would go online through Zoom.

  • Students would also have access and be assigned work through other online resources determined necessary by the teacher.

  • Attendance, tardiness, participation, homework, and due dates would still apply in an online format.


Computer Labs

  • All computer labs on campus will have in use computers positioned to provide as much space as possible and dividers between each computer.

  • Electronic devices will be assigned to individuals as much as possible.

  • All keyboards, mice, and desks will be disinfected between uses.  

COVID-19 and Flu testing

  • SAA will not be providing or transporting students for testing for COVID-19 or the flu.  

  • Students suspected of having either COVID-19 or the flu will have to leave campus and will be responsible to seek the appropriate testing and treatment before returning to campus.  

  • Any student who is sent home with COVID-19 symptoms (fever, shortness of breath, coughing, muscle aches, fatigue) must have a negative COVID-19 test and clearance from the school nurse before returning to school.  


Drinking Fountains

  • Drinking fountains on campus will only be available for use to fill personal water bottles.

Personal Protective Equipment

  • Students over the age of 10 and staff will be responsible to have and wear their own personal face mask, covering the mouth and nose.  If staff, visitors, or students forget their mask, or need one while on campus for any reason, they must purchase one for $1 in the office.


Physical Distancing

  • Physical distancing will be required of staff and students throughout campus as much as feasible.

Temperature Checks and Screenings

  • All persons on campus will have their temperature taken daily along with a short questionnaire.


  • All students must have documentation of up to date vaccinations or an appropriate letter of exemption before school starts.


  • In order to limit outside exposure, volunteers at the school will be kept to a minimum or eliminated until further notice. 

  • All volunteers must check in at the office to have their temperature taken and to complete a screening questionnaire before their volunteer work. 

  • All volunteers must also have completed the Sterling Volunteer child protection screening process.
